THE BEDROOM

Hello!! I’m back with another transformation story  – purely because you loved THE BATHROOM (BLOG NO.2) so much – only difference is this time it’s my own creation. I call it my bedroom.

Here’s a quick run down of how I went from this…

…to this – in just 3 weeks!!

It was January 2018 (lol – a lifetime ago).  I got my first home and before I was even in, I had my vision and knew what I wanted to do, starting with the bedroom.

THE BEDROOM

Firstly I should say my room is average size – not big, not small. To decorate, I was mostly thinking of ways to make it look bigger. I looked for ideas everywhere and ended up deciding that I liked the look below (Pinterest find). This was where my inspo came from…

I wanted the feel to be light, bright and airy. So the work began.

WALLS

Red really is not my colour & I wanted rid of it all. I also didn’t love the magnolia used on the other three walls and felt the colours 1. didn’t go well together and 2. could do with being completely covered up basically lol!!

I wanted to do it all myself HOWEVER, I learned from this that I absolutely hate painting and I now salute all painters out there. I was trying to paint this wall at all hours of the night, (it needed several coats), without the right brushes and rollers and all the tools you need & it was an absolute nightmare and a half! I think I cried at one point! So my advice to anyone would be: get a professional to do it!! Shout out to Lewis – Perth’s best painter who did the whole room in no time at all & a very good job at that!

Paint was by ‘Crown’ – Matt effect ‘Snowfall’. It’s a very light grey colour and I love it! 2.5 litre: £18 or 5 litre: £30. The skirtings etc just got another lick of white.

FLOORING

The carpet was originally a sort of beige colour and again, I thought it looked tired and needed ripped out.

The floorboards were okay underneath BUT it would’ve taken me a lot more time to sand, varnish, fill, paint etc rather than just buy some flooring from B&Q (which, as you can see, is what I did).

Shout out to my dad who laid the whole floor successfully HOWEVER, we did face challenges along the way.

As my flat is an old building, the room wasn’t actually a square shape which meant the flooring couldn’t just be placed and slotted together. We had to cut it to fit the room. Nightmare number two but do-able.

Flooring: B&Q roughly £10 per m2. I think I spent about £60 – so, affordable but doesn’t look cheap and I loved the result. It’s exactly what I wanted.

SOFT FURNISHINGS

I do like the idea of curtains in this room but I wanted to put a blind in to open up the window space a bit. This was just a roller blind from Dunelm: ‘Swish Slate Roller Blackout Blind’ – it was about £30 #barg and my mum cut it down and fitted it for me. Shout out to my other talented parent.

DECOR

I finished the room off with white bedding, yellow cushions/throw & picture frames that tied in with my colour scheme (yellow black white).

Pictures and frames: IKEA. £1.75 per frame & £6 for 4 prints. Cushions: TKMAXX £30 for 2. Throw: DKNY £30. Bedding: IKEA £35.

My bedside lamps were from IKEA (£10 each) but I put different IKEA shades (£3 per shade) on them so it was in keeping with the grey. I like the idea of putting a different shade on when I fancy.  p.s. That plant is a wee fakey from Home Sense £4.99!

The bed and bedside tables were from IKEA too and the slimline mirror was one I already had which was pink & ancient. I painted it white with the same paint used for the skirting boards.

I like minimalistic style and for my bedroom, I wanted bright, white and fresh. I think the whole thing (including labour & all decor) cost me about £300!! TIP: It pays to shop around & DIY (apart from painting)!!!
